Hi, I’m Dee, author of The Radical Roamer. I’m a radical single mom/fighter/lover who lives for adventure, and has a passion for the earth and human rights.
I grew up a Mixed Chinese American in the San Francisco Bay Area. I spent most of my youth in the city or in nature, playing sports, annoying the shit out of adults, fighting with my brothers, traveling, camping, prank calling people, choreographing talent show dances to N’Sync or Spice Girls, chasing celebrities, fishing and … partying. After high school, I partied some more and became a very active graffiti writer for over ten years. I did a lot of really “exciting” activity, and also got in trouble with the law quite a few times.
While going through an abusive relationship, dealing with a lot of legal issues and working full time, I managed to make my way through college and get my B.A. in Sociology. I focused a lot on the problems of homelessness and food insecurity, and worked with the homeless population in San Francisco. As a kid, I was used to seeing people live on the street, and wanted to know why.
So, I went on to get my M.A. in Human Development and Food Security in Rome, Italy. The program was sponsored by the United Nations and Food and Agriculture Organization.. I learned a lot about food systems, global and local economies, corruption within the UN and FAO, how to input statistical data into Excel, more papers and presentations. Everything was very theoretical. I wanted hands on! We had teachers from all over the world, including from the UN and NGO’s. But the person who stood out the most to me, was a farmer from Mali.
The most important thing I learned was about something my classmate told me about- PERMACULTURE. After graduating, I spent a few years learning about Permaculture through books, videos, hands-on workshops and discussions, and experimenting on different farms. While I composted and played in the dirt growing up, I didn’t really dig into gardening until the recent years.
Graffiti still has a big part of my heart, but my canvas is now the earth, and my mission is how I can put back into it every day! I also continued to work with herbs, including cannabis, and found a passion for dumpster diving.
I’m currently continuing my Master’s research on the effects of consumerism on our environment, the people and animals within it. I travel to places where our food and goods are produced, and share how it’s affecting our precious earth.
Check out my blog to see what kind of shenanigans I’m up to!
